How do you get a driver’s license in Virginia if you are over 18?
In Virginia, if you are 18 years or older and have never held a driver’s license, you must complete the following steps to obtain a license:
Complete driver training requirements
You must either:
Hold a Virginia learner’s permit for at least 60 days, or
Successfully complete a state-approved driver education program while holding a learner’s permit.
Apply at a Virginia DMV service center
You must submit:
One proof of identity
One proof of legal presence
Two proofs of Virginia residency
Proof of Social Security number (if issued)
Driver education completion certificate (if applicable)
Driver’s license fee ($32 for an eight-year license)
Pass required tests
Vision screening is required for all applicants.
Knowledge exam: Required for first-time drivers.
Road skills test: Required only if you did not complete a driver education program and instead held a learner’s permit for 60 days.
If you complete a state-approved driver education program, you do not need to take the road skills test at DMV.
