Required documents and items:
A valid Virginia learner’s permit
Proof that you have passed the Virginia knowledge exam
Proof of state-approved driver education completion or an In-Car Maneuvers Observation Record, if applicable
If you passed the knowledge exam but were not issued a learner’s permit, you must bring all documents required for an original Virginia driver’s license application
Vehicle requirements (you must provide the vehicle):
Valid registration card
Valid license plates
Valid Virginia safety inspection sticker
Properly working:
Brakes
Safety belts
Horn
Headlights and turn signals
Mirrors
Speedometer
Rental vehicles are allowed only if you are listed as an authorized driver
Additional requirements:
Vision screening is required
Tests are conducted on the road, in English
Translators/interpreters are allowed under DMV rules and must meet eligibility requirements
If using a translator/interpreter, the vehicle must have a back seat with safety belts
Failure to bring any required document or a properly equipped vehicle will result in test cancellation.
Drivers who want to avoid the DMV road test may be eligible to complete a DMV-approved Adult Waiver Course instead. NOVA DRIVING SCHOOL VA offers a Virginia DMV-approved Adult Waiver Course for experienced drivers age 18 and older, allowing qualified students to obtain a waiver in place of the DMV behind-the-wheel test.
