When can you get your driver’s license in Virginia?
In Virginia, a person may obtain a driver’s license at 16 years and 3 months of age. A learner’s permit may be obtained at 15 years and 6 months of age. No exceptions are permitted to these age requirements.
Additional requirements depend on age and driving history:
Under 18 years old: Must complete a state-approved driver education program and provide written parental or legal guardian consent.
Age 18 or older (first-time drivers): Must either complete an approved driver education course or hold a learner’s permit for at least 60 days before taking the DMV road skills test.
All first-time applicants must provide proof of identity, legal presence, Virginia residency, and Social Security number (if issued).
NOVA DRIVING SCHOOL VA provides state-approved programs that meet Virginia DMV requirements, including:
Teen Behind-the-Wheel Driving Course for students under 18
Adult Waiver Course and Driver’s Education Online Course for drivers 18 and older
These courses help eligible students legally qualify for their Virginia driver’s license in compliance with DMV rules.
